    About the ratings

Power Ratings (PR) are Steve Makinen's own manually adjusted ratings, updated after every game from live action and box scores. The PR line reflects each team's rating plus home-field advantage and any injury or situational adjustment.

Effective Strength (ES) is purely statistical: each team's key stats against schedule strength and its previous opponents' averages, adjusted for key injuries on both sides.

Bettors' Rating (BR) quantifies how bettors perceive teams, from how the lines of recent games have moved and closed.

Starred plays. Each rating's projection is compared to the posted line; where the gap reaches the sport's threshold the play is starred, and starred plays are graded once the game is final. The question to ask: did one of the ratings find something the market missed?

Injuries. Where a key player is doubtful or out, the adjustment is already in the ratings. Where he is questionable or probable it is not, so account for a late scratch yourself. Each morning the ratings are adjusted for results, closing lines and injuries.
